How to Afford Your Next Therapist Retreat

How to Afford Your Next Therapy Retreat

Article Summary: Some of the best strategies for affording therapist retreats include saving each month, using a payment plan, counting the trip as a business expense, finding different expenses to slash, or connecting with Tomi Ward (the founder of My Wellness Retreats) for more savings tips!

Here’s something not many people know:

I started My Wellness Retreats because I know what it’s like to suffer from therapist burnout.

At some point in my career, I realized I needed to pause every few months to really focus on my mind and body to continue performing at a high level for my clients and the team at My Wellness Center.

At its core, My Wellness Retreats is an attempt to provide affordable therapist professional development opportunities without charging a fortune.

Still, costs can feel high, especially when you combine airfare, room, food, and the CE credits themselves. That’s why we’re exploring the best strategies to pay for your next therapist retreat.

6 Ways to Afford Your Next Therapist Retreat

Here are some of our best tips for paying for your next therapist CE retreat:

1. Save Each Month

Most CE therapist retreats are scheduled months or years in advance, and this gives you extra time to save money.

To help illustrate, let’s say a retreat is listed at $2,500 and is scheduled to take place in 16 months.

Yes, affording the full $2,500 right now might be tricky (To be fair, it’d be tricky for most people!), but it only comes out to saving $156.27 per month

2. Use A Payment Plan

Payment plans encourage monthly saving strategies, and they turn huge lump sum payments into a handful of simple payments.

At My Wellness Retreats, we generally charge a small monthly fee instead of thousands of dollars, making the expenses easier to afford.

3. Expense It

If you’re attending a professional therapy retreat for CE credits, it’s technically a business trip. Even if you’re surrounded by the lush, rolling hills of Ireland or the beautiful rainforests of Costa Rica, you’re still taking meaningful, measured steps to professional development.

And that’s work.

If You Work For Someone Else: There’s a chance your company offers to cover CE credits, which could significantly reduce your overall expenses for a full retreat—even if they won’t cover airfare or room and board.

If You’re Self-Employed: Keep your receipts. You can expense your airfare, hotel room, CE credits, meals, and more. As a business owner, you can deduct these expenses from your overall business revenue, which lowers your tax burden. Note: Always consult with a tax professional for rules and regulations around deductions.

4. Find Areas to Save Money

Every seasoned traveler seems to have tips on how to save money while you’re away from home. Some ways you can potentially save money:

1. FlightsGoogle Flights is a great place to start your search and to sift through options based on pricing, but other common recommendations include:

2. Room and Board – Depending on what’s included with your retreat, small choices around lodging and meals can substantially reduce your total costs:

3. Travel Rewards – If you have plenty of time before your retreat, everyday purchases may help offset some of your travel expenses:

5. Schedule A Zoom With Me

I created My Wellness Retreats because I realized I was on a burnout cycle. If I didn’t escape from the office every few months, my health and work would suffer.

Like I said at the beginning of this article, My Wellness Retreats is my gift to fellow therapists. Together, we can develop new skills, build relationships, and take a moment to take care of ourselves.

I want to share that with you.

6. Realize It’s Not An Expense; It’s An Investment

Sometimes, all you need is to flip your perspective. A CE retreat isn’t just an expense that appears on your credit card; it’s an investment into your future.

Think about it. A CE retreat is an opportunity to deepen your skill set and connect with other professionals who can alter the course of your career.
